BIG DAY OUT 2010 dares you to look into the eyes of the new face of American metal: MASTODON.
Four Southern gents from Atlanta, Georgia _ Brann Dailor, Bill Kelliher, Troy Sanders and Brent Hinds _ MASTODON have clocked up 10 years melding brains with brawn, technical proficiency with sheer ass-kicking thunder. In that time they have become nothing less than “the most important new band in metal” (Rolling Stone).
In 2009, MASTODON released Crack the Skye, the natural and brutally honest next step in their evolution. The album is an out-of-body experience about astral projection, Russian czars and the devil’s dominion. “There are lyrics about black holes and secret societies and wormholes and the magnet of wisdom,” says guitarist Bill. “I don’t know exactly what it means. But the content really paints a picture in your head.”
On stage, MASTADON are blue-collar workers with a blue-ribbon reputation. They’ve supported Metallica and Slayer, and played festivals from the hard-rock haven Download to the hippie-ish Bonnaroo, all the while unleashing “huge, blistering tracks that journey over peaks and valleys and ditches and oceans before leaving you spinning” (Pitchfork).
MASTADON don’t just create an aural assault – they make music a physical experience. Expect to feel the earth rumble under your feet, the sky crack above your head and the rock thunder to tumble down when MASTADON show BIG DAY OUT how they’re changing the face of metal.
